ALBERTA CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION TOTAL DONATIONS: $187,000
Cardio-Respiratory Monitors
These portable monitors are state of the art equipment which help to predict and prevent respiratory failure. The hospital wished to have a monitor for each bedside. At a cost of approximately $17,000 each, Chas has approved the purchase of 11 of the desired monitors. We used money from previous tournaments to buy the first 2 monitors and then with the wonderful success of this year's golf tournament, we have been able to purchase another 9 from a total of 20. It is very gratifying to know that at the time of preparing the report, the ACH has completed the project and does have a monitor by each bedside.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS TOTAL DONATIONS: $121,880
Easter Seals Camp Horizon- $25,000
Camp Horizon was originally designed for summer use only, but demand has grown so that events and activities are offered year-round. The buildings and facilities were old and out-dated and in 2007 an extensive plan was developed to re-design and refurbish the Camp. Chas was proud to be able to help with this project with a $25,000 donation toward the re-building of the new swimming pool. Construction is well under way and they hope to have the pool open for the summer of 2011.
Servants Anonymous - $17,000
This group provides long term programs and support to women and children who are victims of, or who are at risk of, sexual exploitation. They have added a stabilization program named the SAFE House that provides immediate support to women while they wait to enter their formal long term program. While at the SAFE House, participants need to be accompanied by a support worker and whenever leaving the House transport is needed to take women and children to various programs. Chas supported their request for a 6 - 7 passenger van for these purposes with a donation of $17,000.00
Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing $18,960
The theme for the 2009 Holiday Luncheon was the Para-Olympics. In keeping with this, Chas was able to provide $18,960 to send a number of disabled children to ski camps in support of their endeavors to participate in future Olympic events.
Inn from the Cold $41,375
In the spring of 2009, Chas helped out with the "Sex in the City" movie fundraiser for Inn from the Cold. This project raised a total of $41,375. Chas also provided $2,500 to enable Inn from the Cold to purchase bookshelves in support of their new library project.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary - Mary Selby Scholarship $1,250
$1,250 was given to the scholarship fund and the scholarship was awarded in June 2010 to Tomi to help further her education at the University of Lethbridge.
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program - Stanley Jones School $5,795
This program provides educational services for deaf and hard of hearing students in Calgary through a program which emphasizes the use of residual hearing, lip-reading and maximum use of visual aids. There are 3 classes of approximately 20 children each. Chas was pleased to purchase a Smartboard for $5,795 for use in the classrooms.
Heartbeats $10,000
This volunteer group provides information, resources, emotional support and financial assistance to children born with heart disease and their families in the Calgary area.
Families need to journey frequently to Edmonton where most heart surgeries are performed. Chas provided $10,000 to allow Heartbeats to continue to assist families with basic expenses for travel, lodging and food as well as some "extras" to support their emotional well-being.
Camperships total donations: $37,500
A total of $37,500 was donated from casino funds to the following: Easter Seals - Camp Horizon, The Prep Program, Learning Disabilities, YWCA, Canadian Diabetes, Between Friends, Boys and Girls Club.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS APPROVED IN THE CURRENT FISCAL YEAR
Cups $35,000
Cups is an organization dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome poverty. The programs they offer focus on health care, education and social services to address the root causes of poverty and achieve lasting solutions. Their SEED Program focuses specifically on the healthy social, emotional and cognitive development of high-risk infants and young children. The funds from the Bridge Luncheon and an anonymous donor will support this program with a cheque for $35,000.
Hull Child and Family Services $25,000
Hull serves some of Calgary's most severely disturbed and tragically abused children and is dedicated to helping kids and families achieve success in their lives. They provide a continuum of services including specialized therapy, counseling and education. Two of their programs, New Roads and the Patch program are focused on early intervention to help children and teens deal with issues. The Holiday Luncheon will raise funds to support these programs.
